CHARLOTTE, NC — Police have arrested a 14-year-old they say admitted to shooting another 14-year-old in Greir Heights Tuesday. Investigators say D’Andre Martin’s shooter cracked on day three. They won’t release the gunman’s name because he is so young.
Investigators say they arrested him Thursday in connection with a car theft in Southern Mecklenburg County. In the interrogation room, police say he admitted to shooting Martin on Tuesday on Sam Drenan Rd.
Martin was skateboarding by a convenience store just down the street from his house when police say the other 14-year-old called his name. When Martin walked up, the boy shot.
“I want to know why. Why did you do this to my son? Why? Why didn’t your parents say something? Why didn’t you turn yourself in?” said Courtney Monroe, the victim’s mother.
Capt. Norman Garnes says the boys were schoolmates and lived in the same neighborhood. Martin is known as a good student. He’s never been in trouble.
“Truly the victim is really a good, one of the really good kids in the neighborhood,” said Capt. Garnes.
As for the shooter, investigators say there’s no indication he was affiliated with any of the 59 gangs reported in Charlotte last year.
“I doubt it very seriously. Again, just 14-year-old probably didn’t have as much support as he needed and out there just made a bad choice,” said Capt. Garnes.
Capt. Garnes says investigators are working to find out how he got the gun. If someone gave it to him, they could face charges as well.
The victim’s mother is unsatisfied with the juvenile charge of assault with a deadly weapon against her son.
“He knew what he was doin’ when he shot my son. He knew what he was doing,” said Monroe. “He did an adult crime, he needs adult time.”
