Man Charged In West Charlotte Cold Case Murder

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say they charged a man for a cold case murder that happened in west Charlotte.

Investigators say Gary Hames stabbed Lottie Webb to death at her home on Ridge Avenue on January 7th, 2000.  At the time, police were not able to identify any suspects.

In 2013, the case was re-opened by the CMPD Cold Case Unit and evidence from the case was submitted for DNA examination.  Based on the evidence found, Hames was identified as the suspect.

Hames is currently in prison serving time for habitual breaking and entering charges.  Police say he was been arrested over 46 times in Meckenburg County.

Police served Hames with warrants for murder, armed robbery and breaking and entering Thursday.

The CMPD Cold Case Unit has reviewed 143 cases since it began in 2008.  Of those cases, 40 have been cleared and 25 of those were cleared by arrest.
