Charlotte Prepares For Winter Weather

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the city of Charlotte and its partner agencies continue to prepare for the impending weather event, residents are being urged to use caution on area roads when traveling Wednesday evening and Thursday.

The following is the latest information regarding preparations for the winter weather expected overnight tonight, and into tomorrow morning.

Charlotte Department of Transportation

-Evaluation of streets and roads will be on-going.

-CDOT has 32 trucks, 64 crew members and supporting staff to treat and plow roads as necessary.

-Three additional trucks will respond to service requests from police and fire.

-Icy conditions can be called in to CharMeck 311.

CDOT Safety Reminders

-Motorists are cautioned to stay back from heavy equipment treating roads.

-Motorists should decrease speeds, and increase following distance.

-Residents are asked to treat the sidewalks adjacent to their property.

-Black ice will reform quickly as temperatures drop. Motorists are cautioned about driving and

the possibility of black ice forming overnight.

Solid Waste Services (SWS)

-SWS will monitor weather and street conditions Thursday morning to determine if delays in collection services are necessary.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport

-The Airport is continuing to monitor weather conditions.

-Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight status before leaving for the Airport. Additional system wide aircraft activity can be found at http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp

-The Airport will initiate its snow and ice control plan around 6 p.m., which includes rotating snow teams to treat runways, taxiways and landside areas.

-Pretreatment of the airfield will begin as conditions warrant.

-Deicing operations are prepared to begin when requested by the airlines.

-Airport roadways, overpasses and parking areas will be monitored and treated as necessary.

-The Airport continues to work with its partners and airlines to accommodate passengers.

-The Airport is prepared to initiate its irregular operations plan, if needed, to assist with stranded passengers who may remain in the terminal overnight. This includes extending concession and checkpoint hours, adding additional aviation department support staff and providing emergency supplies to travelers.

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS)

-Providing regular bus service this evening for as long as possible.

-Lynx light rail platforms and parking lots have been treated.

CMPD

CMPD will be monitoring weather conditions and has increased staffing to provide support.

Mecklenburg County Library

Libraries will close at 7 p.m. tonight

CharMeck 311

-311 will be open until 8 p.m. tonight.

-311 will open early tomorrow morning at 6 a.m.
