CHARLOTTE, NC — Snow was clear from the roadways Thursday evening, but crews were left battling the threat of black ice.

“I got into a really bad car wreck, so black ice is no joke,” said Maris Valentin.

Overnight and into Thursday morning, police worked nearly 80 crashes in Mecklenburg county.

That’s exactly what the Department of Transportation is working to prevent with 18 salt trucks coating interstates and county roads into Friday morning.

To salt one lane for one mile, NCDOT says it costs the state $14.

By Tuesday, the state spent more than half of its $40 million snow removal budget, but the state has no plan to scale back efforts to keep roads safe.

“Just got to be cautious,” said Chad Brown. “You can’t drive as fast. Always pay attention when you’re driving, and look out for yourself and others.”

While Charlotte DOT has done what it can to fend off the ice, it says black ice will be inevitable through Friday morning.
