NFL and NHL deadlines today…New AP hoops poll today…PGA play in Florida and Johnson wins in Atlanta

UNDATED (AP) — This is the last day NFL teams can designate franchise or transition players. Teams had two weeks to use the franchise tag to avoid having a player hit the free agent market. Only four players were tagged last year after eight the previous year. A record 21 players were tagged in 2012.

UNDATED (AP) — The NHL trade deadline is today. There were several deals over the weekend and one late last night. The transaction was between the Flyers and Lighting and saw Philadelphia trade defenseman Braydon Coburn to Tampa Bay for defenseman Radko Gudas (GOO’-duhs) and draft picks. The Flyers also will acquire first- and third-round picks in the 2015 draft.

UNDATED (AP) — The new weekly Associated Press men’s basketball poll is due later today. There won’t be any change at the top as Kentucky and Virginia won all their games last week. The third-ranked school in last week’s poll, Gonzaga (gahn-ZAG’-uh), did suffer a loss and may drop.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The delayed final round of the PGA’s Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is underway. When play was stopped last night because of darkness, Paul Casey and Patrick Reed shared the lead.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson was the winner of yesterday’s Sprint Cup race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The six-time Cup champion pulled away after a final restart with 13 laps to go to get the win. The victory is the 71st of Johnson’s career, and his fourth in Atlanta.
