UNC hires DBs coach Warren from Nebraska staff

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina has hired Charlton Warren as its defensive backs coach.

The school announced Warren’s hiring Monday.

Warren spent last season at Nebraska and before that worked at Air Force, his alma mater.

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora was an offensive assistant during Warren’s final two seasons as a defensive back for the Falcons in 1997 and ’98.

Warren was the only coach retained by new Nebraska coach Mike Riley. Instead, he followed John Papuchis to North Carolina to work for new defensive coordinator Gene Chizik.

He will try to improve a defense that ranked last in the ACC and near the bottom of the Bowl Subdivision, allowing 257 yards passing per game.
