CHARLOTTE, NC — WCCB Charlotte is learning more about the man police say attacked an 83-year-old woman and stole her car at the Cotswold Harris Teeter Tuesday.

Scottie Barringer was driving around in Marjorie McOrmond’s car when police arrested him Wednesday. He was less than five miles from the grocery store where they suspect he attacked and robbed the 83-year-old a day earlier.

“I would chew him out good,” said Mary Renfroe. “And If I could, I’d kick his ***.”

Renfroe is McOrmond’s neighbor.

McOrmond is a great grandmother who, according to arrest records, was up against a man with a criminal history dating back to a rape and sexual offense in 1997.

Then, he failed to register as a sex offender and went to prison.

Records indicate the he just got out three months ago when police say he picked his elderly target at the Harris Teeter Tuesday before lunch.

Police say McOrmond was getting out of her car when a man rushed up, knocked her to the ground, stole her purse, stole her keys and jumped into her car.

A Harris Teeter employee tried to stop him, but the suspect ran over his leg trying to get away.

We went to that employee’s house. He asked us not to give his name. He says Harris Teeter wouldn’t let him talk, but he did say he had to jump in to help.

“That fella was very, very brave taking on something like that,” said Renfroe.

McOrmond’s daughter wrote on Facebook that her mom  “…succumbed to exhaustion…” after surgery on her hip that was “…shattered in 8 places.”

“She’s a sweet, sweet lady,” said Renfroe.

Barringer’s first court hearing is in a week and half.

McOrmond’s family says she will be in the hospital until Friday.

Harris Teeter sent WCCB Charlotte this statement:

“Harris Teeter is deeply upset this crime occurred in our parking lot. Our thoughts are with our loyal shopper and valued associate who were both injured. Thankfully, they are both in stable condition and neither was critically injured.”
