North Korea plans to attend University Games in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean organizers of this year’s University Games say North Korea intends to attend the sports event.

The news comes as North Korea is angrily reacting to this week’s start of annual South Korea-U.S. military drills that the North calls a rehearsal for invasion. South Korea says North Korea test-launched two short-range missiles into the sea on Monday.

The University Games’ organizing committee says the North wants to send 75 athletes and 33 sports officials to the games to be held in the South Korean city of Gwangju in July.

North Korea boycotted the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics, both held in Seoul, but it has since attended several other events in the South, including last year’s Asian Games in Incheon.
