SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s largest airline, Korean Air, has joined the list of corporate sponsors for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the country’s ski resort town of Pyeongchang.
An official from Pyeongchang’s organizing committee said Wednesday the agreement requires Korean Air to provide air transport for South Korean athletes and Olympic staff members and cargo services related to the operation of the games.
Pyeongchang organizers have been struggling to find companies to join its domestic sponsorship program, a critical source of revenue for the Olympics. Korean Air, whose chairman Cho Yang-ho took over as the head of Pyeongchang’s organizing committee last year, is just the fifth company on the list.
Last month, South Korean President Park Geun-hye made an urgent appeal to local business leaders to sponsor the games.
