Nats’ Zimmermann to Marlins’ Alvarez: ‘Can I help you?’

VIERA, Fla. (AP) — Jordan Zimmermann and Henderson Alvarez exchanged brush-back pitches and angry glares Saturday in a Washington Nationals split squad’s 4-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

Zimmermann was upset after getting grazed on the elbow by a pitch in the second inning. Alvarez took exception with a low inside fastball that sent him to the ground as he attempted to bunt in the fifth.

The two pitchers gave each other long, angry looks after each incident. Zimmermann told reporters he said, “Can I help you?” as Alvarez headed past him on his way back to the dugout.

Alvarez, who is projected to be the Marlins opening-day starter with Jose Fernandez recovering from Tommy John surgery, gave up all four runs in the third inning.

Wilson Ramos hit a two-run single and Dan Uggla had a two-run home run for Washington.
