KING’S MOUNTAIN, NC — A break-in turned into what police believe is a disturbing case of animal cruelty.
A Kings Mountain family came home to find their dog decapitated Thursday.
“I was in shock,” said Shirley Morrow. “I mean, a million questions like, why? ‘Why?’ that was my main one.”
Morrow says Libby was a 12-year-old rescue dog. She was blind, but could hold her own. Morrow’s husband, Dennis, says the dog could open the door to the back yard.
“She, for a blind dog, had run of the house, but like any animals wants to get out of the house and play,” said Dennis.
However, it was outside where Kings Mountain Police say it’s possible the blind dog may have run into burglars.
That’s because when the Morrows found Libby dead, they also realized someone stole several tools.
“If anyone in the neighborhood is capable of this, what are they capable of when it comes to children?” said Dennis.
Police say it’s not likely another animal killed Libby. If that were the case, there would probably be blood evidence. Investigators haven’t even been successful at locating the dog’s head at this point.
“They looked everywhere,” said Morrow. “The back, the front, the mailbox.”
Police were interviewing neighbors Friday evening. There are no witnesses so far. Investigators say if anyone has any information, call 704-734-0444.
