CHARLOTTE, NC — A man trying to sell his car ended up shot and carjacked in East Charlotte Wednesday.
Police are still searching for the gunman at this point in the investigation.
Family says 23-year-old Quentin Brown thought he was meeting someone to sell his Ford Crown Victoria when witnesses say the fake buyer pulled a gun.
“I heard him say get the f*** out of the car,” said Patrick Norman. “He just shot him in the neck.”
Police say the shooter took off in the car, leaving Brown bleeding at East 18th and Harrill Streets.
“Very disturbing, very,” said Wanda McNeil. “Because this is normally a quiet street.”
Brown’s family says he’s a father who works at the airport and in construction. They say he wanted to sell the car to buy a truck to start a car detailing company.
They say his father owns a local detailing company and is a minister at Grace and Mercy Ministries.
“Life is becoming so dangerous now, you can’t do something as simple as sell a car,” said Nisa Allen. “It’s ridiculous. It’s really sad.”
Lt. Christian Wagner with CMPD says it’s not clear yet if the gunman found out Brown was selling his car online, though Facebook or through word of mouth.
“People use different ways of buying and selling, and if they don’t know the people, there is the potential for something to happen,” said Lt. Wagner.
Police say the safest place to sell anything to a stranger is in the parking lot at one of their division offices.
Brown was in the neighborhood filled with families and children. He parked the car right next to a church before four in the afternoon.
“That stray bullet could have hit me!” said Norman.
Police expect Brown to survive the gunshot to the neck, but witnesses have a message to the carjacker.
“If you want something, go out and work for it, you know?” said Norman. “Ain’t nothing coming for free your way, and when you do dirt, it’s going to come back on you.”
Police have not yet released a description of the suspect.
