CHARLOTTE, NC — Controversy circling back to Charlotte from Washington State after the NAACP says it stands by one of its chapter presidents who is facing accusations of posing as a black woman.
Her parents say Rachel Dolezal is white and has been misrepresenting herself to people for years.
The Spokane Chapter NAACP President says she’s been the target of hate crimes more than a dozen times. She checked several ethnicity boxes on a job application for the local police fairness oversight committee.
When a reporter asked if she is white Dolezal said, “I don’t, I don’t understand the question. I did tell you that yes that’s my dad, and he was unable to come in January.”
Here in Charlotte, people are curious why.
“She shouldn’t be deceptive,” said Veronica Carter, “She’s in a leadership role. Because if she’s with the NAACP, I don’t care, because she’s not there based on race. She’s there to help.”
“Personally, I feel if you lie about your race, what else or things would you deceive people about?” said Melissa Washington.
“At the end of the day, race should never be an issue,” rebutted Isadore Johnson.
Charlotte’s NAACP President Rev. Corine Mack says the controversy is distracting to real Charlotte problems.
“We’re not having the real conversation about African Americans being killed, high unemployment in my community, poverty in my community, cuts in education, gender bias, all these things are more important to me.” said Rev. Mack.
