BRAVES-METS

Mets hit 4 HRs, rally from 5 down to beat Braves 10-8

NEW YORK (AP) β€” Juan Lagares hit a go-ahead homer and the New York Mets used a surprising power surge to rally from five runs down Sunday, beating the Atlanta Braves 10-8 for their biggest comeback victory of the season.

Darrell Ceciliani launched his first major league home run, and Dilson Herrera also had a solo shot in the fourth inning. Travis d’Arnaud’s two-run drive off reliever Brandon Cunniff trimmed the deficit to 8-7 in the fifth, and New York took its first lead in the sixth.

Pinch-hitter Michael Cuddyer and Curtis Granderson singled before Lagares pulled a 1-2 breaking ball from Luis Avilan (2-2) into the left-field stands.

Sean Gilmartin (1-0) worked two hitless innings for his first career win, striking out three. New father Jeurys Familia got four outs for his 19th save in 20 tries, aided by Herrera’s sensational play at second base to end the eighth.

DREAM-SUN

Stricklen’s 3-pointers help Sun run away from Dream 82-64

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) β€” Kelsey Bone and Shekinna Stricklen both scored 18 points to lead the Connecticut Sun over the Atlanta Dream 82-64 on Sunday.

Stricklen came off the bench to hit 4 of 6 3-point attempts. Bone was 9 of 11 from the floor. Jasmine Thomas had 17 points and Alyssa Thomas added 10.

Angel McCoughtry paced the Dream with 24 points. Erika de Souza and Tiffany Hayes both added 10 points.

Connecticut (3-1) took over in the fourth quarter, using a 9-2 run to go up eight, then scored 13 straight β€” including consecutive 3-pointers by Stricklen β€” to build a 20-point lead.

The Dream (2-3) raced out to a 20-5 lead early, but the Sun used a 13-2 run β€” including Chelsea Gray’s 3-pointer β€” to trim the deficit to four at the end of the first quarter.

Connecticut then dominated much of the second quarter to run up an 11-point lead before Atlanta put together an eight-point run to trail by three, 39-36, at the half.

CWS-CAL STATE FULLERTON-VANDERBILT

Fullerton leads Vandy 3-0 in CWS game suspended by weather

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) β€” Heavy rain and lightning forced the suspension of the Cal State Fullerton-Vanderbilt game at the College World Series on Sunday night.

Play will resume at 12:05 p.m. EDT on Monday with the Titans leading the defending national champion Commodores 3-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The weather disrupted a magnificent performance in progress by Cal State Fullerton ace Thomas Eshelman.

Eshelman was on the mound when the teams were pulled off the field because of lightning near TD Ameritrade Park. The two-time Big West pitcher of the year had allowed four hits, walked none and struck out eight.

Fullerton scored against Vandy’s Carson Fulmer on Taylor Bryant’s RBI single in the third and on a wild pitch and Josh Vargas’ base hit in the fifth.

GLF-ST JUDE CLASSIC

Fabian Gomez wins 1st PGA Tour title at St. Jude Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) β€” Fabian Gomez of Argentina won his first PGA Tour title Sunday at the St. Jude Classic, beating England’s Greg Owen by four strokes.

Gomez, 36, started the round tied with Owen atop the leaderboard at 9 under with 23 players within four strokes. Gomez shot 4-under 66 for a 267 total for the win. He carded a five birdie-one bogey round for his first PGA title in his 70th start in a season already featuring three top 25s.

Taking home the winner’s check of $1.08 million is a nice turnaround for Gomez who had to earn back his tour card through the Web.com Tour last year.

Owen finished with a 70-271.

Phil Mickelson remains winless since the 2013 as he tied for third (65-272). He finished with a flourish, rolling in a 25-footer for birdie that nearly lipped out on No. 18.
