MLB-SCHEDULE
All baseball now
UNDATED (AP) β With the NBA and NHL playoffs ending, baseball gets a chance to take center stage now β at least until the NFL starts practice in a month.
A check of this evening’s schedule shows a full complement of games and once again they are all interleague contests.
In Seattle, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners attempts to join Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole as the only 10-game winners this season. Hernandez enters tonight’s game against the Giants 9-3 on the season. He’ll be facing World Series star Madison Bumgarner, who has won seven of 10 decisions this season.
The Pirates have won six straight but have not been able to gain much ground on first-place St. Louis in the National League Central. The Pirates have won seven of their last 10 games, and the Cards have had the same success. This evening Pittsburgh is in Chicago for the first of two games against the White Sox in the Windy City. They played two earlier in the week in the Steel City with the Bucs taking them both. The Cardinals have moved to Minneapolis for a game against the Twins after taking two from the AL club on Monday and Tuesday in St. Louis.
David Price has a shot at becoming the first Tigers starter to throw three straight complete games since Jack Morris did it 25 years ago. Price, coming off a shutout of Cleveland, faces another Ohio rival tonight, Cincinnati. Johnny Cueto (KWAY’-toh) starts for the Reds.
The rest of the card tonight has Baltimore playing in Philadelphia, the Yankees home to Miami, the Rays in Washington, New York’s Mets in Toronto, the Braves entertaining the Red Sox, the Cubs in Cleveland, Kansas City hosting Milwaukee, the Astros in Denver to play the Rockies, the Angels at Arizona, Oakland home to the Padres and Texas in LA for a game with the Dodgers.
US OPEN
Final day of practice
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) β The opening round of the second major of the year in men’s golf starts Thursday at Chambers Bay, which is located just south of Seattle in University Place, Washington. The defending champion is Martin Kaymer (KY’-mur), who also won the 2010 PGA Championship. All of the big names will be on hand for the start of play on a course that reminds a lot of people of a British Open links-style course.
COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
Day 5 play
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) β There’s just one game on tap this evening in the College World Series. The contest is a replay of an opening-day contest as Miami of Florida takes on Florida’s Gators. In that contest Florida walked off the field with a 15-3 victory. On the year the Gators are 50-17 while the Hurricanes are 50-16.
FIFA-CORRUPTION
Swiss official cites suspicious bank dealings
BERN, Switzerland (AP) β Banks in Switzerland have reported 53 possible acts of money-laundering in the investigation of FIFA’s (FEE’-fuhs) 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests, according to the country’s attorney-general. Michael Lauber says the reports on “suspicious bank relations” were filed to comply with Switzerland’s regulations against money laundering.
The federal prosecutor described a “huge and complex” case which targets “criminal mismanagement and money-laundering” in the bidding contests which sent the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar (GUH’-tur).
Lauber is prepared for either country to be stripped of the hosting rights if new evidence proves wrongdoing.
