UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) β€” Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson share the first-round lead at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, while Tiger Woods finds himself 15 shots back following his worst round in tournament history. Stenson and Johnson each shot a 5-under 65 that puts them one stroke ahead of Patrick Reed and two in front of Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur), Ben Martin and amateur Brian Campbell. Masters champ Jordan Spieth (speeth) shot a 68, Phil Mickelson carded a 69, world No. 1 Rory McIlroy signed off on a 72 and Woods had eight bogeys and a triple-bogey in a 10-over 80.

NEW YORK (AP) β€” Alex Rodriguez is one hit shy of 3,000 after going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the New York Yankees’ 9-4 win against Miami. Rodriguez hit an RBI single in the first inning and reached on an infield single in the fifth for his 2,999th hit before two-run homers by Brett Gardner and Carlos Beltran led the Yanks to victory. The Marlins lost despite Giancarlo Stanton’s major league-leading 25th home run.

CHICAGO (AP) β€” Gerrit Cole is the majors’ first 11-game winner after tossing seven innings to lead Pittsburgh to its eighth consecutive win, 3-2 over the White Sox in Chicago. Cole limited the White Sox to two runs and only three hits in seven innings, leaving him 11-2 with a 1.78 ERA. Jung Ho Kang scored the tiebreaking run on a fielder’s choice and was 2-for-5 with an RBI for the streaking Pirates.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) β€” Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer and the Philadelphia Phillies ended their longest losing streak since 1999 by downing Baltimore, 2-1. The Phillies had dropped nine straight and trailed 1-0 until Howard launched a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Jake Diekman picked up the win in relief of Sean O’Sullivan, who gave up a run and four hits in five innings.

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” Nationals star Bryce Harper strained his left hamstring while taking an awkward tumble making a throw in Washington’s 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay. Manager Matt Williams said Harper had a mild strain and would be further evaluated Friday. There was no estimate on how long Harper might be out.
