Charlotte To Host 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C — The city of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been chosen to host the 2017 NBA All-Star weekend according to reports.

A formal announcement is expected to be made by Commisioner Adam Silver at a press conference on Tuesday. The Charlotte Hornets organization and the city of Charlotte formally submitted a bid for the event nearly a year ago.

Charlotte previously hosted the All-Star festivities in 1991 at the, since demolished, Charlotte Coliseum.

All-Star Weekend consists of various skills competitions including the slam-dunk contest and a 3-point shooting contest, which was won this year by Charlotte native Stephen Curry.  It also features a game between select first- and second-year NBA pros and a Development League All-Star Game. There also will be a fan fest, likely at the Charlotte Convention Center.

The city of Charlotte agreed to contribute $33.5 million of the $40 million needed for improvements, that the NBA saw as necessary for any team hoping to host All-Star Weekend.

All-Star weekend will generate significant revenue for the city as fans from around the world come to partake in the activities.
