ATLANTA (AP) β The Atlanta Hawks have announced that Danny Ferry has stepped down as general manager of the team. That ends an indefinite leave of absence that began in August following racially derogatory comments Ferry made about free agent Luol Deng. The team says in a statement that an investigation found that Ferry’s remarks were not racially motivated and the offensive language was not his.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) β Thaddeus Young has informed the Brooklyn Nets he will become a free agent, and general manager Billy King says they want to keep the forward. Young is bypassing the $10.2 million he would have made in the final year of his contract. Young was acquired from Minnesota for Kevin Garnett at the trade deadline and played well as the Nets overcame a slow start to make the playoffs.
NEW YORK (AP) β The WNBA and New York Liberty have agreed to suspend Isiah Thomas’ ownership application indefinitely. His hiring as team president in May was met with some objections considering Thomas’ past. He was the subject of a sexual harassment lawsuit when he was president of the NBA Knicks that cost Madison Square Garden $11.5 million. Thomas still denies the accusations.
PEARLAND, Texas (AP) β Authorities say former Major League Baseball player and recent MLB Network analyst Darryl Hamilton has been killed in a murder-suicide. Police say Hamilton was found Sunday after he was fatally shot at the home in the Houston suburb of Pearland. A woman police identified as Monica Jordan died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She and Hamilton had a 14-month old child who was unharmed.
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) β A journalist close to Diego Maradona (mar-ah-DOH’-nah) says the retired soccer star has told him he plans to run for president of FIFA (FEE’-fah). Journalist Victor Hugo Morales says on Twitter that the controversial Argentine soccer legend has confirmed he’s a candidate to replace longtime president Sepp Blatter, who is stepping down amid a corruption scandal in soccer’s governing body.
