UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) β€” Jordan Spieth (speeth) birdied the final hole to win the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay by one stroke over Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen (WUHST’-hy-zehn). The 21-year-old Spieth closed with a 1-under 69 for a 5-under total, two months after winning the Masters. Johnson three-putted for par on 18 to fall into a tie with Oosthuizen, who followed back-to-back 66s with a 3-under 67.

LOS ANGELES (AP) β€” The San Francisco Giants were unable to grab the National League West lead from the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday. Instead, the Giants are 1 Β½ games back after Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH’-nee GRAHN’-dahl) homered twice in the Dodgers’ 10-2 rout of San Francisco. Adrian Gonzalez added a solo blast and Justin Turner was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs as the Dodgers avoided a three-game sweep.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) β€” St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha (WAH’-kah) was hit hard in his bid to become the majors’ third 10-game winner of the season. Wacha was tagged for five runs and eight hits in five innings as the Redbirds absorbed a 9-2 thumping by the Phillies in Philadelphia. Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole leads the majors with 11 victories, one more than Seattle’s Felix Hernandez.

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” The Washington Nationals have completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who entered the series riding an eight-game winning streak. Bryce Harper smacked a two-run homer and Yunel (yoo-NEHL’) Escobar added a three-run shot while the Nats exploded for nine runs in the first inning of a 9-2 romp over the Pirates. Bucs starter Charlie Morton entered the game 5-0 with a 1.62 earned run average before surrendering nine runs in just two-thirds of an inning.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) β€” Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jered Weaver has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and will undergo an MRI on his left hip. The move comes one day after Weaver suffered his fourth consecutive defeat in the Angels’ 4-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Weaver said he’s been bothered by soreness in his hip for some time, but doesn’t think it’s related to his current slump.
