Ongoing Bakers Mountain Fire Has Burned 40 Acres

BAKERS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — A fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in Bakers Mountain has already burned approximately 40 acres as of this morning, according to the Catawba County Emergency Management Coordinator Karyn Yaussy.

Around 150 fire fighters have been involved in battling the flames. North Carolina Forest Services and Mountain View Fire Department are the primary agencies in putting out the fire with support from Catawba County Emergency Services, six area fire departments including Newton, Propst Crossroads, Cooksville, Sherrills Ford, and Triple Community, Catawba County EMS and the Hickory Rescue Squad.

“No residential structures are at risk but due to heavy smoke residents in the area with respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis or COPD are cautioned to remain indoors with the windows and doors closed and their air conditioning running,” Yaussy said.

Yaussy also claimed that the agencies involved hope to contain the fire completely by late this afternoon, but weather could be an issue.
