Canes place Semin on waivers, plan to buy out his contract

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) β€” The Carolina Hurricanes have placed forward Alexander Semin on unconditional waivers.

The team announced the move Tuesday, saying it plans to buy out his contract.

The Hurricanes say Semin must clear waivers at noon Wednesday before his deal can be bought out. They say he was told of the move Tuesday.

The 31-year-old Semin has three years remaining on a contract extension signed in March 2013 that pays him $7 million per season.

Semin had a career-worst six goals and added 13 assists in 57 games during a disappointing 2014-15 season. He had 41 goals and 64 assists during three years with Carolina.

NASCAR-DAYTONA-CONFEDERATE FLAG

Daytona offers American flags in exchange program

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) β€” Daytona International Speedway will not ban the Confederate flag from track property this weekend, but will offer the American flag to those who wish to fly it on property.

Daytona President Joie Chitwood said Tuesday the speedway will offer an exchange program in which fans can trade a flag for the American flag. Daytona’s hosts NASCAR races on Saturday and Sunday nights this weekend.

Chitwood said there’s not enough time to plan and enforce a ban on the Confederate flag, which NASCAR chairman Brian France does not want flying at NASCAR events.

NASCAR has taken a strong stance against the flag since nine black churchgoers were slain in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17. The suspect in the case, Dylann Roof, embraced Confederate symbols before the attack.

Zimmermann sharp as Nationals beat Braves again, 6-1

ATLANTA (AP) β€” Jordan Zimmermann took a shutout into the eighth inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 6-1 on Tuesday night to continue their season-long dominance of the division rivalry.

The NL East-leading Nationals have won nine straight games in the season series with the Braves β€” including a three-game sweep at Washington last week.

Zimmermann (6-5) ended a streak of three losses since his last win on June 2. He earned a no-decision despite throwing eight scoreless innings against Atlanta on Wednesday. He continued that dominance in his second straight start against the Braves, allowing six hits with no walks and six strikeouts in 7 2-3 innings.

Clint Robinson hit a two-run homer to cap Washington’s four-run first inning off Shelby Miller (5-4).

PHILADELPHIA (AP) β€” Grant Sturgeon shot a 1-under 69 on Tuesday for a share of the third-round lead with Ben Polland in the PGA Professional National Championship.

Sturgeon, a PGA assistant pro at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York, had four birdies and three bogeys on Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course to match Polland at 4-under 208.

Polland, a PGA assistant professional at Deepdale in Manhasset, New York, had a 73.

Matt Dobyns, the 2012 winner, was a stroke back after a 68. He’s the head professional at Fresh Meadow in Lake Success, New York.

The low 20 after the final round Wednesday will earn spots in August in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.
