WIMBLEDON

Day 5

LONDON (AP) β€” French Open champion and Wimbledon fourth seed Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRINK’-ah) has advanced to the fourth round at the All-England Club with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win over Fernando Verdasco of Spain. The match took less than two hours to complete. The women’s fourth-seed, Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH’-vah), has a match as well today.

The two top-seeds are also scheduled to play. Serena Williams is facing Britain’s Heather Watson while Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) is playing Bernard Tomic (TOH’-mihch).

Among the Americans in action today are men’s No. 17 John Isner (IHZ’-nur) and women’s 16th-seed Venus Williams.

The day began with a minute of silence for the people murdered by an Islamic terrorist last Friday in Tunisia. Thirty of the 38 victims were British tourists.

Queen Elizabeth II and British Prime Minister David Cameron also observed a minute of silence at noon local time.

MLB-SCHEDULE

Royals and Twins resume series tonight

UNDATED (AP) β€” Just like the old days when there were no lights at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Cubs have an afternoon game today against the Marlins. Each team starts the day with a three-game winning streak and the Cubs are seven games over .500 for the season.

This evening, the Royals and Minnesota continue their big mid-season series in Kansas City. The Twins, who are just 3 Β½ games back of the first place Royals in the American League Central, won the opener last night 2-0. At the beginning of the season, not many people would have bet that this early July series would feature the two teams leading a division that includes Detroit. The Tigers are six games out of first and this evening face the Blue Jays in Detroit.

Two of the teams battling for the top of the AL East are meeting tonight in New York as the Yankees entertain the Rays. The Yankees share first place with Baltimore while the Rays, who have lost five straight, are a game back. Baltimore is playing in Chicago against the White Sox tonight.

Josh Hamilton is facing the Angels for the first time tonight since the abrupt April 27th trade that sent the former five-time All-Star back to Texas after two injury-plagued seasons in Los Angeles. He has only been able to play in nine games with the Rangers because he spent a month on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. The game is being played in Arlington, Texas.

The remaining games tonight feature the Nationals entertaining the Giants, Cleveland in Pittsburgh, the Red Sox home to Houston, the Brewers in Cincinnati, the Braves home to the Phillies, San Diego in St. Louis to face the Cardinals, Oakland’s Athletics entertaining the Mariners, Colorado at Arizona and the Dodgers home to the Mets.

PGA-GREENBRIER CLASSIC

Woods returns with 4-under

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. (AP) β€” Second round play is taking place today in the PGA’s Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. The leader after the opening round was Scott Langley at 8-under.

Four shots off the lead was Tiger Woods, who bounced back from a horrendous showing in the U.S. Open two weeks ago when he failed to make the cut. The winner of 14 Grand Slam events shot a first round 4-under-66.

Two-time Masters champ Bubba Watson is one back of Woods.
