Twins explode in 9th

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Detroit Tigers’ revamped bullpen is looking a lot like the old bullpen.

The Minnesota Twins erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Tigers 8-6. Brian Dozier completed the rally with a three-run homer, one inning after he hit an RBI single that ended Justin Verlander’s shutout bid.

Danny Santana’s two-run single got the Twins within a run. Dozier followed with his 19th home run of the season and his second game-winning blast this week.

The game-winning slam came off Joakim Soria, one of the bullpen holdovers after Joba (JAH’-bah) Chamberlain and Tom Gorzelanny were released last week.

The outcome keeps the Twins 5 Β½ games behind the AL Central-leading Royals. The Tigers are eight games behind Kansas City.

The Royals have a six-game winning streak after Danny Duffy allowed four hits in six innings of a 3-0 shutout of Toronto. Eric Hosmer went 4-for-4 to help Duffy pick up his first victory in more than two months. Salvador Perez, Alex Rios and Alcides (al-SEE’-dehs) Escobar each had two hits and an RBI for the winners.

Elsewhere in the majors:

β€” Gerrit Cole picked up his major league-leading 13th victory and Neil Walker hit a two-run homer as the Pirates downed St. Louis 5-2 in Pittsburgh. Cole gave up six hits in seven innings, including Matt Carpenter’s two-run blast in the third. The outcome puts the Pirates within 4 Β½ games of the NL Central-leading Cardinals.

β€” Rookie Noah Syndergaard (SIN’-dur-gahrd) was terrific in the New York Mets’ 4-2 triumph over Arizona, striking out a career-high 13 and limiting the Diamondbacks to a run and four hits in eight innings. Syndergaard blanked the Diamondbacks after the first inning and improved to 4-4. Lucas Duda put the Mets in front with a three-run homer in the first, one batter before Michael Cuddyer (kuh-DY’-ur) hit a solo shot.

β€” The Mets are two games behind the NL East-leading Nationals after the Orioles rallied for a 3-2 win over Washington. Jonathan Schoop (skohp) won it with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth, one inning after Matt Wieters (WEE’-turz) lined a game-tying double. Adam Jones also homered for the Orioles, who remain three games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

β€” The Dodgers trailed 2-0 in the seventh until pinch-hitter Andre Ethier laced a two-run single and Joc Pederson added the tiebreaking double in a 3-2 win over Milwaukee. All three runs were unearned after third baseman Hernan Perez booted a two-out grounder. Chin-hui Tsao was a winner in his first major league appearance in seven years, helping the Dodgers keep their 5 Β½-game lead over San Francisco in the NL West.

β€” Hunter Pence belted a grand slam while the Giants exploded for eight runs against Cole Hamels in a 15-2 drubbing of Philadelphia. Joe Panik had four of the Giants’ 22 hits, including a two-run homer that prompted a fan to jump from the bleacher concourse into McCovey Cove to retrieve the ball. Hamels was charged with a career-high nine earned runs as the Phillies fell to a major league-worst 29-60.

β€” The Yankees were 5-1 winners in Boston as Michael Pineda (pih-NAY’-duh) held the Red Sox to a run and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Colby Rasmus hit a second-inning homer for the Astros, who have dropped four straight and six of seven.

β€” Mike Trout and C.J. Cron both homered twice and the Angels pulled within a half-game of the AL West-leading Astros by whipping Seattle 7-3. Trout’s three-run blast in the third put Los Angeles ahead to stay. Hector Santiago gave up one run in seven innings as the Angels won for the sixth time in seven games.

β€” Prince Fielder hit a solo homer and had two RBIs as Texas downed San Diego 4-3. Adrian Beltre (BEHL’-tray) also went deep and Wandy Rodriguez improved to 6-4 by allowing a run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Suspension reduction for Hardy

IRVING, Texas (AP) β€” Dallas defensive end Greg Hardy’s suspension for his role in a domestic violence case has been reduced from 10 games to four by an arbitrator.

β€” Two people with knowledge of the arrangement tell The Associated Press that Deron (DEHR’-ehn) Williams has accepted terms of a buyout with the Brooklyn Nets and will join the Dallas Mavericks if the point guard clears waivers Monday.
