CINCINNATI (AP) — The Major League All-Star game is scheduled to begin within the hour in Cincinnati, although there’s a 20 percent chance of rain and possible thunderstorms in the area during the midsummer classic. Zack Greinke (GREHN’-kee) of the Dodgers is scheduled to start for the National League against AL hurler Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul) of the Astros. The NL leads the overall series 43-40-2, but the AL has won the last two games.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Baseball management is intrigued with the idea of using pitch clocks to speed play in the major leagues, while the players’ association thinks it is a horrible idea. Average game time this season has dropped by nine minutes over the first half of last season since MLB adopted rules requiring hitters to keep at least one foot in the batter’s box and to put up clocks timing between-innings breaks.
UNDATED (AP) — A U.S. Magistrate has ruled the NCAA must pay more than $46 million in bills stemming from last year’s Ed O’Bannon case. Judge Nathanael Cousins wrote in his 28-page ruling that the organization was responsible for slightly more than $44.2 million in fees for O’Bannon’s lawyers, and another $1.5 million in costs and expenses. O’Bannon’s side had requested about $50.8 million.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Devils have re-signed defenseman Eric Gelinas (ZHEH’-lih-nuh) to a two-year, $3.15 million contract. Gelinas led all New Jersey defensemen with six goals in a career-high 61 games last season after providing seven goals and 29 points in 60 games the previous year. He’s been with the Devils since being selected in the second round of the 2009 draft.
MONTREAL (AP) — Michael Bournival (BOHR’-nih-vahl) is staying with the Montreal Canadiens after accepting a one-year, two-way contract. The 23-year-old forward delivered three goals and five points in 29 regular-season games for the Canadiens last season. Bournival also had three goals and six assists for the Habs’ AHL affiliate at Hamilton.
