Glendale, A.Z. — The Arizona Cardinals announced that they are hiring Jen Welter as an assistant coach intern to work with the inside linebackers. Welter is the first woman ever to be hired for a coaching position in the NFL.
Welter will work with the Cardinals during training camp and the preseason. Welter was a 14-year pro in women’s pro football and she was the first woman ever to play a non-kicking position in a men’s pro league when she earned a running back position for the Texas Revolution of Indoor Football League.
Welter has experience coaching men’s football as well as she was a linebacker and special teams coach for the Revolution. She not only brings athletic experience to the Cardinals, but also a bright mind as she has a master’s degree in sports psychology and a Ph.D. in psychology.
Cardinals head coach, Bruce Arians, claimed in an interview in March that NFL teams would hire a female coach when they “can prove they can make a player better.” It appears Welter has proved she can do just that and possibly more.
