Jimmy Carter’s pastor says former president is in their prayers
PLAINS, Ga. (AP) β Jimmy Carter’s pastor says members of Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, are praying for the former president, who announced last week that cancer has spread from his liver to other parts of his body.
The Rev. Jeremy Shoulta says it feels “almost like a family member has been diagnosed and we’re treating it that way as a small church.”
Shoulta says the 90-year-old Carter taught his usual Sunday school lesson at Maranatha on Aug. 2, the day before his liver surgery, and is scheduled to teach eight more classes through October. But the former president noted that his schedule will be rearranged so he can undergo treatment.
Shoulta says people from all over the world attend Carter’s Sunday school classes “to hear him talk about his faith, what it means to live the Christian faith and also how we can go about our lives in a more positive, meaningful way as we seek to relate more lovingly to our neighbors.”

(AP) β A New Jersey brewery is releasing a limited edition beer to commemorate Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia next month. Sales representative Justin Vitti says the beer pairs well with a nice cut of beef from Argentina, Francis’ home country. Krill says the beer will be available at the brewery’s tasting room in the Jersey shore town and in watering holes throughout Philadelphia and New Jersey beginning Sept. 21. Debbie Wright of Cross Pointe Freewill Baptist Church told the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette that the infection has left her with breathing problems, but she and the church’s pastor, the Rev. Bill Pitts, said they understand it was an accident and don’t hold any grudges. Wright said the sickness has been hard on her because she’s a singer and was affected from the chest up. She is still having ill effects but said she’s making progress. Of the 30 people who showed signs of the rare illness, 21 were hospitalized and one died. State officials say the botulism was likely caused by home-canned potatoes in potato salad at the luncheon. The illness is caused by a nerve toxin produced by bacteria. JEWISH SITE SHOOTINGS-TRIAL Murder trial to begin in Kansas Jewish site shootings KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β A capital murder trial starts this week for a Missouri man who claims he was morally obligated to kill three people last year outside two Jewish sites in suburban Kansas City. Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., a 74-year-old avowed white supremacist, has publicly acknowledged firing the shots that killed 69-year-old William Corporon; his 14-year-old grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood; and 53-year-old Terri LaManno on April 13, 2014, in Johnson County, Kansas. Miller said he was trying to target Jewish people and didn’t know that none of the victims was Jewish. Facing a possible death sentence, Miller fired his court-appointed attorneys in May because he said he didn’t trust them and wanted to speak for himself. Johnson County Judge Thomas Kelly Ryan allowed it, but has rejected a “compelling necessity” defense, in which Miller planned to argue that Jewish people were taking over the country and he had a moral duty to stop it. A church groundskeeper found the device Friday. Trujillo said it wasn’t attached to the church but was on its grounds. There were no injuries or deaths from the blasts outside Calvary Baptist and Holy Cross Roman Catholic. Each building sustained minor damage. He worked for the church from 2004 to 2013. The Church of God headquarters oversees 36,000 congregations around the world. FRANCE-ISLAMIC STATE France to rally aid for religious minorities targeted by IS PARIS (AP) β France is hosting a conference next month to raise money and rally support for Mideast Christians and other minorities persecuted by the Islamic State group. The conference Sept. 8 will focus on humanitarian efforts to support ethnic and religious groups in Syria and Iraq who have become key targets of IS extremists, suffering mass executions, sex slavery and other abuses. Diplomats from some 60 countries are expected to join the conference, co-hosted by Jordan, according to a French diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity. Military solutions aren’t on the table. France is taking part in U.S.-led airstrikes in Iraq against the group, and is worried about fallout from extremist violence at home by French radicals who support IS. LIBYA Islamic State affiliate consolidates hold over Libya’s Sirte TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) β A witness says Islamic State fighters have consolidated their hold over the city of Sirte in central Libya, are desecrating the bodies of their adversaries and are issuing calls from loudspeakers over the main mosque for residents to pledge their allegiance. Cleric Khalid Awad says the extremists hold the area around the mosque and have surrounded disputed residential areas, where resistance has ceased. He says the extremists killed some of their prisoners and hung the bodies from bridges, roundabouts and highways across the city. The Islamic State affiliate spread into Sirte in March, taking advantage of the chaos plaguing Libya since 2011. It has been battling a rival Islamist group for control of the city since earlier this month.
