Sex Scandal Leads to High School Investigation
CHARLOTTE, NC — Multiple Charlotte high schoolers are facing sex crime charges against a fellow student.
The case revolved around key members of the Butler High School football team.
Sources say videos of the encounters were circulating around the school. Police confirm detectives are investigating exploitation of a minor charges.
The teenage sex scandal circling Butler High School surfaced when the district suspended football players for Friday’s game.
We aren’t releasing any suspect names because of their ages, and police have yet to charge anyone.
CMPD says the crimes detectives are investigating after the incident allegedly happened at a house in Charlotte and involved several current and former students from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. The victim is 15 years old.
Investigators close to the case tell WCCB Charlotte police are trying to determine if the sexual activity was consensual. If the age gap between any of the suspects and that victim is more than four years, that could lead to a statutory rape charge.
The school district would not confirm if any Butler football players are involved. The district would only say it is aware of CMPD’s investigation.
A spokesperson did give me a copy of the the policy on athlete suspension which states: “Violations which occur outside of school and are reported and substantiated will be dealt with in the same manner as if they occurred here at school.”
CMPD reported the crime last Friday, the same day the kids were suspended from playing. Police are also investigating larceny and damage to property charges.
Since the investigation is ongoing, we don’t know when the football players will be allowed back on the field.
