Flood Kills One, Strands Homeowners, Drivers

CHARLOTTE, NC — Rescue teams are monitoring flooding Monday. 

Families in Waxhaw were stranded for nearly ten hours after as much as five feet of flood waters barricaded 150 homes in the Shannon Vista neighborhood.
 
“It’s a little stressful having to figure out what we are going to do if we couldn’t get in there tonight,” said Jennifer Deblasio.
 
She and her children found shelter with Red Cross at New Town Elementary School while water receded outside their home.
 
“At least we know our homes are high enough up that our homes shouldn’t be damaged,” said Deblasio.
 
In Charlotte, CMPD worked more than 60 car accidents in the morning and evening rush hours.
 
Brandon Watts was killed during morning rush hour when he wrecked of Interstate 485, and a hydroplaning car crashed into him.
 
In Union County, crews rescued a driver stuck on Shannon Road.
 
“It can get pretty bad when we have a couple days of good, solid, heavy rain, and people are still trying to drive down it,” said Jason Wade.
 
A creek topped to roadway at Secret Road and Saratoga Boulevard in Indian Trail, stranding one driver and causing another to crash into the creek.
 
Crews blamed some street flooding on leaves clogging storm drains. 
 
“it can cause hydroplaning, which can cause car accidents,” said Mark Boone, Spokesperson for Mecklenburg County Storm Water Services.
 
After nearly 10 hours of flood, firefighters were able to let families back into their homes in Shannon Vista. Thankfully, no homes were damaged.
