Owner Sends Message to Gunman Who Shot Mini Horse
HICKORY, NC– At least one gunman is on the run after shooting a woman’s miniature horse with a shotgun.
“Cruel” is how Susan Underwood describes the close range shooting of her miniature horse.
“What were you thinking? What was going on in your mind? How evil is that to shoot an innocent, beautiful, little creature like that in his own pasture?” said Underwood.
The owner says she heard the shotgun blast just before midnight November 1. Before realizing that bullet hit her horse, the gelding stood in the rain for 14 hours, unable to walk. The shrapnel shattered his clavicle. The vet could not save him.
“Knowing he stood there in pain all that time, it just kills me,” said Underwood.
She buried Bailey in the field he shared with his mate.
“She was pawing the grave and even laid down on top of it,” said Underwood.
She moved that mini horse to a rescue for its protection.
“It was heartbreaking,” she said.
Deputies tell her they’ve interviewed neighbors who saw a small gold car speed past the fence on 15th Avenue Southeast in Hickory. Ten days later, there are still no suspects.
“This person will kill a kid if he’ll kill that horse,” said Underwood. “I don’t want to see somebody lose a child or husband or wife because of this person.”
If you know who is responsible or connected to the crime, call Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
