County Employee Accused of Stealing Money From Kids’ Camp

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police are investigating a county employee accused of stealing money from children.
Mecklenburg County would not release the name of the employee while the investigation is ongoing.
Police say the person stole money families paid to send their kids to summer camp at Albemarle Center on Idlewild Road.
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation reported to police Thursday that the worker collected $1,650 in June.
According to the police report, the employee gave them hand-written receipts. That person never entered the information into the county computer system and never deposited the cash.
Kids still went to the camp, but the money was still missing as of November 13.
“They should have been on top of that from day one,” said one parent, Shauna Northington.
A county spokesperson would not say why directors just noticed the missing money, or if taxpayers are still paying for that employee to continue working right now.
WCCB Charlotte reached out to County Commissioners.
Only Matthew Ridenhour and Pat Cotham responded. They said they couldn’t comment because police are still investigating.
CMPD is not releasing the suspect’s name until they gather more evidence.
