NCDOT Prepares Roads For Possible Winter Weather

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Crews will be prepping Charlotte area roads as the threat of winter weather moves into the area over the weekend.

NCDOT proactively treats bridges and overpasses in advance of a winter storm because those elevated structures freeze first during periods of cold and inclement weather. Non-elevated roads have some insulation from the ground, which delays freezing, according to a news release.

Starting Saturday, the counties Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell and Lincoln will be receiving brine on bridges and overpasses on their major highways. Bridges and overpasses on U.S. 74, U.S. 321, N.C. 16 will be included as well.

Counties such as Anson, Union, Mecklenburg, Stanley and Cabarrus will not be a part of the brining processing due to forecasts showing more mild weather conditions. The NCDOT will be keeping up with forecasts in case of sudden change in weather conditions.

Additional information about severe weather and safety tips for motorists is available on NCDOT’s website.
