WATAUGA COUNTY, NC — The Town of Boone is under a boil order for the next 24 hours after a large water main burst.
Boone’s Utilities Director, Rick Miller, says the eight inch pipe blew out along Pilgrim’s Way this morning after temperatures dropped to 26 degrees overnight. The water pressure drop could cause contamination in the pipes over the next 24 hours.
Residents are asked to use bottled water or boil water vigorously for one minute before use.
Officials will decide to lift or extend the boil order around noon on Friday, depending on whether water samples taken Thursday morning are clean or contaminated.
Watauga County Schools have decided to dismiss early today due to the water issues and the threat of incoming snow.
Grades K-8 will release at 1pm, and Watauga High School will release at 2pm.
