DOJ Calls HB2 Violation Federal Civil Rights

CHARLOTTE, NC–“Astonishing position they take based on a novel bureaucratic interpretation reinterpretation of a 50 year old law,” said N.C House Representative Dan Bishop.

Co-author of House Bill 2, Representative Dan Bishop quickly defended the bill and denounced the Dept. of Justices letter to Governor McCrory calling House Bill 2 a violation of federal civil rights.
“The Obama administration policy risks creating chaos in the way we govern ourselves,” said Bishop.
The letter says the state is engaging in a pattern or practice of discrimination against transgender state employees. While attending a North Carolina Chamber event Wednesday night, Governor Pat McCRory responded to the letter showing no signs of backing down.
“Apparently it is now also the federal government’s decision to determine your restroom, locker room, and shower policies. Which is quite an interpretation of federal law,” said Governor McCrory.
We also spoke with Mecklenburg County Democrat Representatives that say this should not be taken lightly and could cost millions for students all over North Carolina.
Around $800 million says Representative Tricia Cotham.
“We haven’t been funding our schools already as a state the way we should and so this loss of federal dollars would be catastrophic to North Carolina,” said Cotham.
Ironically, the Charlotte Chamber and local business leaders made a day trip to Raleigh to talk with legislators about economic issues impacting the Queen City. Chamber President Bob Morgan says one priority is finding a solution to House Bill 2.

“There’s real economic pain being experienced the risk that we carry if nothing is done is significant,” said Morgan.
