Thousands Without Power After CLT Storms Knock Down Trees
Monday's Charlotte Storms
CHARLOTTE, NC — Round two of storms left thousands without power for a fourth night in a row.
“I said, ‘Wow! Look at this, look at this!’,” said Mimi Hines.
Hines and her neighbors on Herin Ave. and E. 35th Street evaluated the damage Monday’s storms left behind.
“It got real rainy,” said Hines. “Everything was coming real fast, and the wind was blowing.”
A tree ripped down the power line by her home. Fire crews pulled up as WCCB Charlotte arrived.
“I had to get my kids to help my neighbor because she’s disabled, and the tree completely blocked her wheelchair ramp,” said Paris Leach.
At Matheson Avenue and Holt Street in NoDa, wind uprooted a tree that landed a foot from Michele White’s home.
“I was just in there praying saying, ‘Lord, please don’t let nothing fall on the house.’,” said White.
“We’ll go around and check on the people in the neighborhood, see if they are okay, and we try to do what we can,” said her husband, Jerry White.
The storm hit the same neighborhoods where people have endured summer heat without power since Friday’s storms.
“It got miserably hot in here,” said Bruce Murphy. “All of our food, we had to put it in coolers, and we lost a lot of food, you know? And we just trying to survive.”
Temperatures inside their homes near Eastwood and East Sugar Creek Road were above 90 degrees.
Crews pulled back on line repairs when evening storms took over, blacking out the neighborhoods again.
Trees blocked traffic and homes around Plaza Midwood and NoDa.
“Ain’t no telling how long it will be out now,” said Leach.
Duke Energy expects power to be restored 12:30 Tuesday morning.
