CDOT Releases Top Charlotte Car Crash Spots
CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte Department of Transportation released the top 99 intersections for crashes in the city.
Evidence of car crashes surround the intersection with the highest crash rate.
“It is dangerous crossing over,” said Trivenia Webb. “Especially this time of day, about five o’clock.”
Webb was driving at South Church Street and West Hill Street where nearly 10,000 drivers like her struggle to get on the John Belk Freeway every day.
It’s an intersection that was in the spotlight in 2014 when Panthers star Cam Newton almost flipped off the bridge.
“I have to kinda start inching out just to make sure nothing’s coming, because I can’t really tell,” said Dawn Hooker.
The second most risky intersection is in North Charlotte. It is Reagan Drive and Tom Hunter Road near I-85.
The third on the list is back in Uptown where East 9th Street meets North College Street.
CDOT bases the number on the number of crashes and the amount of daily traffic. CDOT says total crashes were up nearly 21 percent last year to more than 27,000. 46 people died.
Bicycle collisions went up from 140 to 150 in 2015. Pedestrian accidents remained about the same at 372.
The city installed surveillance cameras at most of the intersections to help the police and traffic engineers determine what’s causing the crashes.
CDOT says people not paying attention caused most wrecks. Speeding is the reason for most deaths.
Back at the riskiest crash spot, CDOT installed an oversized stop sign, re-painted pavement markings and added warning signs.
Drivers like Webb want a stop light. “Or some type of slow-down yellow light,” said Webb.
CDOT suggests the reason for the increase in crashes is an increase in population and drivers compared to last year.
