Wilson’s World: Kids Learning Water Safety with the YMCA

YMCA of Greater Charlotte offers free water safety instruction for kids at area apartment complexes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 1-14, 88% of all youth drownings occur under adult supervision, 70% of African American children and 60% of Hispanic children don’t know how to swim.  The YMCA of Charlotte is working to change those stats by teaching kids how to be safe around water.  Wilson was with Laura Ferguson of the YMCA who is the lead for their Safety Around Water Program to find out more about the program.

The YMCA’s program has visited 20 different apartment complexes this summer where free of charge, kids can come out to the pool to learn water safety and the basics on how to swim to save their life.  Today Wilson was with them at the Orchard Trace Apartments as the kids arrived.

But, today was not only about swimming safety,  Wilson took the opportunity to present his latest Wilson’s Moment of Good Award to Laura.  And boy, was she surprised!  Laura has been the point person for their Safety Around Water Program.  She applied for the grants, got the program off the ground and takes the program to apartment complexes throughout the community.
