Five Burglars Caught in the Act

Charlotte, NC — Police arrested five burglary suspects while officers say the men were breaking into a home in the First Ward Friday evening.

Police say a resident of a townhome on Garden District Dr. came home around 7:00 p.m. and realized the men were inside the home. The victim was able to back out of the house and call 911 without the burglars being aware.

When police arrived, they say they caught Johnny Penny and Javonte Cathcart inside the home. Police arrested them. Two hours later, the other three suspects returned to the crime scene and tried to break into the home again while police were still gathering evidence.

Police arrested Malik Long, Khalil Wallace and Jamaka Culbreath at that time.

Detectives were called in to investigate the incident and after interviewing the suspects and witnesses they charged Penny, Cathcart, Long and Wallace with Felony Breaking and Entering.   Penny and Wallace were both also charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.  Culbreath was charged with Possession of Stolen Goods.
