Update: CLT Toddler Severely Burned in Explosion
Community raises funds for Emily Hinton
Charlotte, NC — A Charlotte woman is stepping up to help a toddler severely burned in an explosion last September.
Two-year-old Emily Hinton is undergoing another surgery, and Sandra Cook is working to raise money for her.
Saturday, WCCB Charlotte captured the moment Cook spoke on the phone with Emily who’s in the hospital.
WCCB Charlotte reported to you when a gas can exploded near a fire the family was burning, and the toddler’s grandmother jumped in to save her.
“When I saw that, it just broke my heart,” said Cook. “It made me forget about myself, and I dealt with her.”
Cook is recovering from a double lung transplant herself, and after relating to the toddler’s tragedy, she’s dedicated to helping the Hinton family raise money for Emily’s surgeries.
Saturday, she held a car wash fundraiser with volunteers.
“The donations are wonderful for the family,” said Laura Morris. “They need help. Everyone does when an emergency happens that you dont expect like that.”
“This is going to take a lot of money to keep her safe,” said Cook.
Emily’s family is in the Winston-Salem hospital with her. Surgeries will continue her entire life.
