Panthers’ Tailgating Recycling Program Returns

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Panthers Tailgate Recycling Program is back for the 2016-2017 season.

Tailgaters are asked to recycle clean cardboard, bottles, and cans in specifically marked recycling bags.   The bags will be given to fans as they enter their tailgating lot. The recycling bags are left at the curb of the lot to be picked up by the City of Charlotte’s Solid Waste team.

“Our fan awareness continues to grow. We are really excited to build on our success from previous seasons’ recycling efforts.  The partnership remains dedicated to diverting waste from our landfills,” says Scott Paul, Executive Director of Stadium Operations for the Carolina Panthers.  “We will continue to focus on educating our fans about the processes we have in place in order to exceed our goals for the 2016 season.  Thank you to Bojangles, Charlotte Center City Partners, Bank of America, Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful, Charlotte Solid Waste, Hands on Charlotte, and especially our fans for this important endeavor.”

Charlotte’s Solid Waste Services Department estimates tailgating generates nearly 10 tons of waste on game days. Last season, over 150 tons of recyclables were diverted from landfills between collection inside and outside of the stadium.

“It’s hard to believe that this program is now in its eighth year and to date the tailgaters have recycled over 245 tons. That’s a tremendous impact on our environment,” says Jake Wilson, Environmental Supervisor, Mecklenburg County. ”Also, I would just like to thank the fans and sponsors that embrace this program and make it happen. Playoffs, maybe even the Super Bowl, again this year!!”
