Hermine Brings Down Trees, Power Lines in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC — Homeowners in Charlotte dealt with the damage from Tropical Storm Hermine.

Trees feel in neighborhoods, knocking out power to hundred in Charlotte.

“Oh yeah! Shook the whole house,” said Susan Selvin. “It felt like an earthquake or something.”

Homewoners in the Beverly Woods neighborhood assessed the damage.

“This reminds me of Hurricane Hugo,” said Keith Patterson. “The rain came, saturated the soil, then winds came and everything topped over.”

Storm water services monitored rainfall and flooding through creek cameras and 100 sensors that detect rising water.

“More than two inches in an hour, that’s when we get into some trouble,” said Spokesperson for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services Mark Boone.

Workers say that much rain fall can cause creeks to flood neighborhoods like Sherwood Forest near McMullen Creek.

The county bought 12 homes there in five years due to unsafe flooding.

“There are still homes near here, and those folks understand that they need to have a plan for a away out,” said Boone.

Storm water workers cleaned debris from drains Friday to get ahead of flash flooding.

Duke Energy sent 330 North and South Carolina workers to Florida to help restore power to Hermine’s victims.

200 line workers headed to coast of North Carolina.

For local dangers and outages, 3,500 are left here to respond.
