Wilson’s World: At the Carolina Aviation Museum Talking “Sully” and the Miracle on the Hudson
"Sully" brings all of the fear and relief of the Miracle on the Hudson to theaters this Friday.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On January 15, 2009 Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenburger, piloting flight 1549 headed for Charlotte, was forced to make an emergency landing in the middle of the Hudson River in New York after it struck a flock of geese and lost altitude. This week, the story of this amazing landing comes to life in the movie “Sully” when it opens in theaters on Friday.
Jim Whitaker, one of the passengers on the US Airways flight, joined Wilson this morning at the Carolinas Aviation Museum to talk about the flight, the Miracle on the Hudson. Standing next to the actual plane that he scrambled out of trying to save his life with all of the passengers, Jim talked about the hard river landing. He walked Wilson through the events as well as how a scared, but courageous, Mother allowed him to help by carrying her baby out of the plane. He also expressed his pride at how Chesley “Sully” Sullenburger calmly took command of the situation and got all 155 passengers and crew members out of the plane safely and without serious injuries.
Wilson and Jim talked about the movie “Sully” that opens in theaters this week and Jim’s mixed feelings about seeing the miracle he lived through brought to the big screen. Wilson wants to catch up with Jim again after he has had a chance to view the movie.
After the US Airways airbus was pulled from the Hudson River, it was brought to it’s final destination, Charlotte, and housed at The Carolinas Aviation Museum. Visitors can view the plane during normal museum hours and see how the plane was lifted from the Hudson and transported to Charlotte.
The Carolinas Aviation Museum, located at 4672 1st Flight Drive in Charlotte, not only houses the Miracle on the Hudson and other aviation exhibits but hosts privates events as well.
