Police Identify Suspect In Wednesday’s SWAT Standoff

Police have identified the suspect as 18-year-old John Sowell. Sowell is charged with two counts of assault on a government official and resisting a public officer.

Officials say Idlewild Road has reopened following a SWAT standoff Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say the suspect led police on a foot chase after they responded to a service call in the area. The suspect ran back to a home where he ended up barricading himself alone inside. The suspect is reported to have mental issues, and has been taken into custody. No officers were injured.

The suspect has been charged with two counts of assaulting government officials. No name has been released at this time.


CHARLOTTE, NC — Police say a section of Idlewild Road in east Charlotte is closed due to police activity.

The section of Idlewild Road between E. WT Harris Boulevard and Braewick Place is closed while CMPD deal with a SWAT situation in the area.
