Marcus Jones Sworn In As Charlotte City Manager
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Recently hired City Manager, Marcus Jones, begins his first official day of work today.
Jones was sworn in at a private ceremony with his family.
Jones is the first African-American City manager in Charlotte’s History, and takes over at a tumultuous time for the city following the shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott by police on September 20th, 2016.
βCharlotte is a wonderful place and Iβm proud to call it my home,β said Jones. Β βIβm looking forward to working with the city council to drive their priorities as we continue building our community.β
Jones was previously the city manager for Norfolk, VA where he served from 2011 until accepting the position in Charlotte. Before becoming city manager Jones served as the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Finance and Administration for the city of Richmond, Va., and Assistant City Manager for Norfolk.
Jones relayed his vision for Norfolk as City Manager to the Hampton Roads Business Journal in 2014 saying:
βWe have this priority in the city, which is a well-managed government,β he said. βWeβre a data-driven organization thatβs efficient, effective, accountable, inclusive, responsive and customer-focused. From time to time, I have my senior leadership team recite that and if they canβt recite that they have to do 50 push-ups. Well, the 50 push-ups part isnβt true, but I recite that because we believe itβs part of the fabric of this organization.β
Charlotte, with a population of roughly 800,000 people is more than three times larger than Norfolk, whose population is about 250,000.
