Union Co. Schools Could Reverse Redistricting

WAXHAW, NC — Union County School District could reverse the controversial redistricting plan that sent students to schools outside of their neighborhood.

Tonight, the school board voted unanimously to start the process of developing a plan to get children back in neighborhood schools.

Many parents in the crowd were relieved by the possible new path.

“It’s a big deal,” said Aaron Asbra. “We fought really hard for a long time for this chance.”

Board member Gary Sides introduced the realignment plan.

“Children need to attend the closet school, and that’s for efficiency of transportation,” said Sides.

In 2014, the school board created a firestorm when it voted to redistrict students to ease overcrowding.

Members say more than 3,000 students had to move schools.

Some parents were angry, claiming their kids had to attend lower performing schools and that their property values would drop.

“We bought our home because of the school,” said Asbra. “That’s an absolute statement of fact.”

Sides’ realignment plan allows children to stay put if they want.

It would also include a citizen advisory committee.

To tackle overcrowding, Sides says professionals will forecast enrollment numbers and give the district options.

“The most important thing is to get it right, not get it done fast,” said Sides.

The school board also announced Tuesday that it will pay an outside firm $11,000 to investigate overcrowding options and deliver results by February 2017.
