Robbery and Rape in Uptown Charlotte

A couple visiting Charlotte is attacked after a night out in Uptown.

CHARLOTTE, NC — An armed criminal, forcing victims into an alley, then sexually assaulting them before stealing a cell phone, a wallet and their clothes.

The man accused of committing the crime sits in jail, thanks to quick action by the victims.

“I can’t remember one like this in Uptown,” says CMPD Captain Dave Johnson. “It’s a heinous crime. It’s particularly disturbing.”

A nightmare scenario.

A couple visiting from out of town, walking back to their Uptown hotel after a night out, when a man with a gun comes out of nowhere.

“The suspect then forced the victims into an alleyway, a little side alleyway area, where he bound the male victim, sexually assaulted the female victim, and then robbed both of them of their property before he fled the scene,” says Capt. Johnson.

After the attack, the victims were able to run to a nearby hotel, flag down a clerk and call 911.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police says those victims were able to give officers a detailed description of the suspect.

About two hours later police located Tevin Williams, taking him into custody. He is facing two counts of first degree rape, three counts of first degree sex offense, kidnapping, armed robbery and possession of a stolen firearm.

Police recovered the gun at the scene. A gun that Captain Johnson says should not have been in Williams’ hands.

“The firearm that he used was stolen recently from a vehicle in Central Division,” says the division commander.

Johnson is urging gun owners to take the responsible steps to make sure firearms like this stay off the streets, and out of the hands of convicted felons like Tevin Williams.

He’s also hoping justice will be served for the victims in this case.

“He has serious charges,” says Johnson. “And we’re hopeful he’s going to get locked away for a long time.”

Tevin Williams served time in prison for a series of robberies committed in 2015. He is scheduled to appear before a judge Friday morning.
