Catawba County, NC — The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has confirmed that approximately 200,000 gallons of cattle waste has come in contact with Potts Creek and is moving slowly towards the South Fork River.
Because the area has seen little rain, the water levels are receding and streams are slow moving which could cause bacteria to settle. Health officials are recommending residents and visitors of Potts Creek and South Fork River use caution when engaging in water activities including fishing, swimming, and kayaking.
While no Catawba County drinking water intakes were affected, all impacted utilities are using alternate water supplies or reserves to ensure drinking water remains safe.
