CONCORD, NC– A concord shark attack survivor is taking another step toward recovery.

A shark took Tiffany Johnon’s right arm while she was snorkeling in the Bahamas with her husband, James Johnson, in June.

Now, it’s training time for the mother of three.

“I can’t go a day without being so thankful that I am standing here,” said Johnson.

Johnson is wearing a preparatory arm to train for one of the most technologically advanced prosthetics available.

“I did endure a horrendous accident,” said Johnson. “So, I can’t expect things to be exactly like they were.”

This is her first week wearing a prosthetic since the shark attack took her right arm less than two months ago.

It helps her get used to the weight and adjust.

“So, I can grab a hold of it pretty good,” said Johnson as she held a pot on the stove. “So, when I make scrambled eggs in the morning or something like that.”

In weeks, she’ll have the new arm that is connected to her nerves with sensors. When she thinks about moving a finger, the sensor will tell the hand to move.

It can cost up to $75,000. She says her insurance covers 60 percent. Donations will help with the rest.

“We’re really excited that she has the opportunity to have this,” said James Johnson.

Until she gets the new arm, she’s learning tricks to help her open jars and hold cooking
tools.

Every day, she says emotions still overcome her.

“Yeah. I cry. It’s tears of thankfulness and tears of joy that I do get to be a mom still,” said Johnson.
