Vandal Draws Swastika on Jewish Family’s Door

CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD is checking on synagogues across Charlotte Friday night after a suspected hate crime.

A Jewish family came home to a swastika on the back door of their home.

“It just screams hate,” said the homeowner.

He asked WCCB Charlotte not to share his name in fear of something worse happening.

“For somebody to have the audacity to come on my back porch, through my gate and write on my back door,” said the man.

He and his wife think the vandal did it Thursday between 4:50 and 6:15 in the evening.

The couple was at synagogue for the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah.

“It does make us feel uneasy in our own home. Again, we feel violated,” said the man.

He says messages of hate are becoming too common.

“We have seen what’s happened in Charlottesville. We see what’s happened, hell, right here in our own city, and now on my own back door,” he said.

The Jewish Federation of Charlotte could not talk Friday because of the holiday.

CMPD says it increased patrols in the neighborhood, added bicycle officers. Officers will walk around on foot Friday night. They will conduct zone checks around synagogues citywide.

“You can’t cannot get away with hate,” said the man. “Not today. It is no longer acceptable.” The FBI will determine if this case is considered a hate crime.

The latest statistics show 208 hate crimes in North Carolina in 2015.
