‘It’s Funny To Hear A Female Talk About Routes’ – Cam Newton

CHARLOTTE, NC — Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is in hot water after making a sexist comment during Wednesday’s news conference.

When Panthers beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton about receiver Devin Funchess’s willingness to embrace the physicality of his routes she didn’t think she would get a response like this… “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

The comment went viral Wednesday causing a huge backlash once again for the Panthers’ star player.

Rodrigue fired back at Cam on Twitter saying she didn’t think it was funny to be a female talking about routes, but rather it was her job to do so.

Many have spoken out in defense of Rodrigue calling the comment “sexist” and saying Newton was way out of line. Others have tried to downplay it by saying it was not meant to be insulting, and ‘Cam haters’ are just using the situation to stoke the fire.

Regardless, Rodrigue did not see the comment as ‘funny,’ and viewed it as an insult to herself and other women in the profession. In a statement released Wednesday evening, Rodrigue says, “This afternoon, I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question about one of his receivers. I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs.”

Panthers Spokesman Steven Drummond responded to the incident saying, “I have spoken with Jourdan and Cam, and I know they had a conversation where he expressed regret for using those words. We strive as a department to make the environment for media comfortable for everyone covering the team.”

In her statement on the incident, Rodrigue painted a much different picture for how that post conference conversation went down.

“I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later,” said Rodrigue. “He did not apologize for his comments.”
