CLT Man Accused of Assaulting Children on Playground

CHARLOTTE, NC — A man taking care of two little girls is in jail Monday night, accused of sexually assaulting them in a Charlotte park.

Ivan Dawkins is expected to be in court Tuesday for the first time.

The sound of kids playing filled Independence Park in Elizabeth Monday.

For two little girl Sunday evening, police say it was not a safe place.

“As an adults citizen, you see something that not right, say something,” said Lee Evans.

Another man did say something. He called 911 when CMPD says he caught Dawkins sexually assaulting the 7-year-old and 9-year-old in the playground around eight Monday evening.

“It makes me sick to know that they would do it anywhere,” said Lonna Vines. “It’s just kind of shocking that they would feel like they had the freedom to do that.”

Just more than two hours later, police found him with the little girls and arrested him in Plaza Midwood.

Turns out, police say he’s their caregiver, not related to them.

Police charged him with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts statutory sex offense with a child.

“It’s really sad it’s really shocking, and just feel bad for those little girls,” said Vines.

Parents say it’s a reminder to not just watch out for their own kids.

“You definitely have to watch,” said Evans. “Even if I go down there right now, and I see a little kid and they’re by themselves, I become a parent.”
